12 Steps for the Recovery of the American Soul
As a veteran and an American, I find myself very troubled on the current state of affairs. We seem to be engaged in an unnecessary and ill-informed war, motivated by one man’s ego, as a distraction from other pressing issues.
Here is some food for thought (and I have changed my opinion about this over the years). I think a national conscription or draft would be more just if the burden of our country’s defense was shared by all Americans of age across ethnic and economic status. I believe we would be much less likely to participate in these misadventures if the children of the wealthy and most privileged class had to serve with the middle and working classes. An economic draft is not just.
The military would then be a melting pot, in which Americans of all ethnic and economic groups would get to know each other and become brothers rather than strangers. I believe this would keep us out of our oh-so-many wars and could help heal our divided nation.
Also, as I was meditating and praying a few days ago, I was feeling a lot of pain about what has happened to our country and the peoples we are hurting around the world. As you may or may not know, I worked in the addiction field for many years and wrote the book Integral Recovery.
In a flash of inspiration, it came to me that I should write a “12 Steps for the Recovery of the American Soul.” I’m very moved by this document and wanted to share it with you.

Please use it in any way you think might help us in this recovery process.
I shared a reading of these Twelve Steps through my podcast, Deep Transformation.
