The Healing Effects of the Vibrational Frequencies of Purring

Research shows that not only does a cat’s purr heal the cat who is purring from various maladies, it can also help heal us humans! This is because the range of vibrational frequencies created by purring—between 20 Hz and 140 Hz—is therapeutic. Scientists are finding that there are specific ranges or exact vibrational stimulation frequencies that correlate to healing and mending a whole host of complaints.

For example:

  • chronic and acute pain was relieved in 82% of study participants in the 50-150 Hz range;
  • therapy for COPD patients is at exactly 100 Hz, and studies have shown cats purring to decrease dysponea (difficulty breathing) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease right at 100 Hz;
  • the range for strengthening muscles (used in Russian sports medicine and at gyms and work-out centers with biomechanical stimulators) is 18-35 Hz;
    the magic frequency for tendon repair is 120 Hz;
  • bone growth and fracture healing occur when exposed to anabolic frequencies between 20-50 Hz (at low dB);
  • and studies show purring frequencies also help with swelling reduction, wound healing, and mobility of joints.

The Story of the Development of Purrfound Meditation  from the creator, Nadja Lind

I love cats – I even had a cat in my baby buggy protecting me. It was a pretty wild and aggressive cat towards “foreigners” (everyone else besides myself and my parents was foreign – hahaha!) and it was very protective – so better don’t try touching me or the cat if you don’t belong to the family. 😀

Growing up with cats, I’ve always loved the soothing feeling of a purring cat sleeping on or beside me. I discovered cats use purring to heal themselves after injuries and even to speed up the healing process of bone fractures. When I recorded cat purring the first time, I was amazed at how low the purring frequencies go. It’s like a bass frequency and I wasn’t aware of that.

I wanted to have these ‘naturally occurring’ frequencies during entrainment. It’s not the first time I’ve used cat purring in an ambient drone, but this time I wanted it to be more prominent.

How to Use

Download the iAwake App

First, download the FREE iAwake App, login with your email and all your tracks will be right there. You can stream them, but we’d advise downloading them (from within the app) to ensure an interruption-free experience, and to be able to listen offline.

Use Purrfound Meditation  as a meditation tool, to take a power nap, to infuse your creative endeavors or to help you relax and re-center yourself. You’ll need headphones because the primary underlying technology is binaural.

Here is what a few of our testers had to say about working with the tracks:

My breathing felt effortless. Being purred into feeling/embracing/releasing emotions feels so nice and gentle. My experience has been that feeling my emotions can be scary but the purr is comforting and I felt real release without the usual overwhelm.  ~ Abigail

With the power of purring by my side I was most certainly able to access more cognitive capacity than without it. There was a sense of being able to move through and process the tasks of my work day with a delightful lightness and ease.  ~Lauren

Frequency Technology

5Hz binaural frequency (Low Theta)
Theta waves correlate with: meditation, intuition, memory, deep relaxation, daydreaming, creativity

This drone track was created using Korg Minilogue analog Synthesizer + ROLI Blocks Seaboard + Omnisphere2 + special sound effects, and recording of the purring cat, Mathilda. Binaural beat is created using two synthesizers.

Purring Technology

The interesting theory that the Fauna Communication Research Institute has come up with to explain how a cat’s purr evolved to be so healing is that because felines have a tendency to spend most of their time lounging, especially when food is plentiful, the purr developed in its particular frequencies and unique harmonics to make up for lack of exercise in order to maintain strong bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Then—although this may or may not be related to purring, but it seems worthy of mention!—a 10-year study done at the Stroke Research Center at the University of Minnesota was cited in an article in Psychology Today, entitled “Cats Better Than Cholesterol Meds in Preventing Heart Disease,” the results being that out of more than 4,000 participants aged 30 – 75, “those who did not have a cat had a 40% higher risk of having a heart attack and a 30% greater risk of dying from other heart diseases than those who do have or have had a cat.” And to get a sense of perspective on the success rate of heart medications, Teitelbaum adds, “For those without a previous history of heart attacks, taking statin medications (e.g., Mevacor, etc.) results in less than 2% decrease in heart attack deaths.” The results with dog owners were not “heart protective” like those with cat owners.

Further studies on humans are underway as to the healing effects of cat purr frequencies, and we recommend checking in with the Fauna Communications Research Institute to keep updated on this remarkable therapeutic approach.

Nadja Lind

Nadja Lind, creator of some of iAwake’s most intriguing and distinctive tracks, such as A Ticket to Glide (In the Flow), The Universe is Friendly!, Kismet, Re-enchantment, Heaven and Earth, Refuge, BE, Theta Joy, Strong Medicine, Purrfound Meditation, Turning In Ambient Meditations, and Workout Ecstasy Volumes I and II, has a passion for recording ambient sounds and developing binaural beat ambient meditations.

Developed initially to support her own healing process, Nadja’s friends and colleagues enthusiastically requested more drone waves with the certain Nadja touch.

After 17 years of calling Berlin her homebase, Nadja now lives in the south of the “Black Forest” in Germany. She has had a globetrotting DJ career since 2003, been a sound designer and producer of electronic music since 2004, both solo and as one half of the live duo “KLARTRAUM,” and is co-owner of the Lucidflow imprint among other labels. Nadja is also a certified specialist in Pain Relief Therapy, Osteo Pressure & Fascia Yoga, and is a certified Yoga Trainer.

Nadja’s personal development and spiritual evolution led her to Ken Wilber’s AQAL map and the idea of “Integral” many years ago, which was the catalyst for starting her own brainwave entrainment meditation series, Turning In.

Nadja was trained in Sadhguru’s “Inner Engineering & Shambhavi Mahamudra” at the Isha Foundation, and has been practicing on a daily basis since October 2017. She works out approximately 4 times a week at the gym, and since 2018 additionally is to find on the mat doing Ashtanga-inspired Vinyasa yoga several times a week as well as hiking in the mountains. During her sessions, Nadja likes to use entrainment + beats.

Nadja has also trained in hypnosis, “Liebscher & Bracht” pain specialist and massage therapy, and is a vigorous practitioner of Voice Dialogue (Hal & Sidra Stone), Quantum Psychology (Stephen Wolinsky), Ho’oponopono (Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len), and Dr. Joe Dispenza’s workshops, and has been meditating on a daily basis for many years.

Even someone like me who’s not a big fan of cats can purr with delight over the nice feeling this track brings. I slept really well when I used it before bedtime.  ~ Christopher Griffin
