I have always wanted to do shadow work, but never quite understood how – then along came Shadow, The Light and the Darkness, and laid out the whole process. Amazing how it covers both hidden gifts and hidden stuff that holds you back, all in a half hour, and I appreciate the brain entrainment/music-only half hour track afterwards too — to process what has happened during the guided meditation. All wonderfully doable. It’s like having your own shadow work therapist available and at hand. – H. M.
These tracks gave me a deeper insight into myself. Made me look at areas of my life I pretty much try to ignore. It brought me a profound message regarding some past events that I had overlooked. It also helped me sleep through the night in a deep and restful way. Enjoyed the journey thoroughly! – J.B.

About the Tracks from the Creator, Joseph Kao
Shadow, The Light and the Darkness, is about acknowledging and opening to all that’s within you — to the full breadth and depth of what it is to be human. This does not simply mean acknowledging and accepting your “negative”qualities; it also means opening to the profound strengths within you. Doing this frees up vast amounts of energy, because instead of trying to maintain a two-dimensional facade, we develop a deep ease and understanding of all of who we are.
This process is designed to be comfortable — but not too comfortable. For shadow work to be effective, it must prod at the areas where we are resistant, the areas we don’t want to look at. By staying present with this resistance and learning what it has to teach us, we open the doorway to true growth and development.
In my experience, the most powerful, effective way to come to know your own shadow is through the mirror of other people. As you relax and listen, you’ll be invited to explore how you judge others, and how you fear/hope others judge you. You’ll then be guided to tune in to what it is that you’re resisting, to connect with it, and to ultimately own it as part of your humanity.
In the words of Walt Whitman, “Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes.”
This program is about discovering the vast, vast multitudes that you contain, and how this kind of self-understanding frees you to be a wiser, stronger, more compassionate, more complete human being.
The Story of the Development of Shadow, The Light and the Darkness from the Creator, Joseph Kao
The idea for this program was first sparked by a conversation with John Dupuy about the tremendous value we’ve both found in shadow work and the difference it can make to people’s lives. These tracks are a distillation of what I use in my own practice, both for myself, and in my work as a psychotherapist.
So what exactly is the shadow? I think of it this way:
The human mind has a natural tendency to simplify the world for us. This is necessary for us to function, otherwise we would be so in awe of the transcendental beauty of our toothbrush that we’d never make it out of the bathroom in the morning.
Simplifying the world is not inherently a bad thing. But it means we may sometimes come to think of ourselves (and others) as an overly-simplified, 2D caricature.
We may end up assuming that we must be absolutely perfect, a shining star, or else we will be rejected and unlovable. Or we may fear that we are secretly so flawed and imperfect that it’s sheer luck that we haven’t been found out yet.
Having this kind of rigid, brittle self-concept means we end up trying to hide our imperfections from ourselves. We become over-sensitive to criticism, and we react disproportionately upon seeing those same flaws in others.
Interestingly, we may equally hide our light from ourselves, where we brush off compliments, and imagine that if a person truly knew us, they surely wouldn’t be giving us that kind of warmth and praise.
In my experience, when people learn to identify and own their shadow, to really see and accept their darkness and their light, it’s like a weight lifts off them. They let go of the old self-judgment, breathe a sigh of release, and allow themselves to be fully human.
These tracks contain a systematic process for identifying and owning your own shadow, to give you a way of truly welcoming and making peace with all of who you are.

Use Shadow, The Light and the Darkness, to:
- Know your own strengths and inner resources
- Open to self-compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness
- Feel more empathy and intuitive connection with others
- Stop over-reacting to people who push your buttons
- Feel much more comfortable and at ease in yourself
- Let go of harsh self-judgement
- Experience a release of natural energy and vitality
- Develop a richer, deeper understanding of yourself
As initial protocol, I recommend listening to track one at least five times a week for three weeks. The results you get will deepen with each listening.
After the first three weeks, you can return to track one as often as you find useful, or use track two for your own, self-guided shadow work.
As you listen, when you are asked to contemplate a particular person, I recommend that you don’t pressure yourself to come up with a specific person. Sometimes an individual’s face or voice may spontaneously come to mind. Other times, you may just have a more general sense of “that kind of person.”
Whatever your experience is, it’s okay, and it will be different on different days.
Trust that there is more of you listening and responding than just your conscious awareness.
As long as you relax and follow along with the words, you will start to notice shifts and releases happening — sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes in profound, deeply affecting ways.
Technology
Brainwave Patterns Targeted
The harmonically-layered brainwave pulses embedded in these tracks are designed to induce a deep theta state, with bursts of gamma waves. This mind-awake/body asleep state is associated with emotional healing, spontaneous insights, and deep transformation.
Soundtrack Details from the Creator, Joseph Kao
The multi-layered soundtrack to Shadow, The Light and the Darkness, contains a unique combination of advanced brainwave entrainment principles.
The tracks contain ever-evolving layers of sound textures, 3D nature sounds, high-definition pink noise, and pure sine waves. Every element of the soundscape is embedded with subtle rhythmic pulsations created through binaural beats, amplitude modulation, and rhythmic panning techniques.
Many of these sound pulses are not designed to be perceived consciously, but they all work together as a harmonic matrix to guide the brain into the optimal state for doing powerful, healing inner work.

I enjoyed the track and the meditation, and felt it prompted some deep things within me to start shifting around. It feels like something has been loosened up that lets me be more compassionate with myself. I will continue to use the track as it feels like there is more to go. Joseph’s voice was very reassuring, easy to listen to and calming, and I felt the music behind his voice was very helpful to achieve a relaxed and receptive state in a short period of time. Easy to use and profound in its effects. – Greg Skyles
Shadow work is something I’ve heard of but not done much of because I was a bit anxious about doing it, like I was going to break a part of my personality or make myself depressed. In fact, the opposite happened, and it released something in me. It opened me up to the right to feel and express hidden aspects of myself. [Shadow, The Light and the Darkness] does what it says, even if you struggle to think of examples, and allows you to acknowledge your shadow and to be okay with that aspect of yourself. – M.T.
